Microlab Computers Plotter Information
MICR0LAB MEMBERS WITH EECS ACCOUNTS can access the Microlab Plotter from a PC within the EECS domain. Note: If there is a permission problem, contact root @ silicon.eecs.berkeley.edu.
NON-EECS MEMBERS can access the plotter from a UNIX workstation or CAPE.
There are 2 drivers available for the plotter. Driver selection is application specific. There are more features available with the HP/GL-2 driver (PowerPoint posters work well with the HP/GL-2 driver). Generally, members should disseminate best practices.
EECS MEMBERS access the plottter from the departmental PRINT server: CAPE has 1 driver:
HP DesignJet 2500CP (HP/GL-2)
Our UNIX cluster supports a postscript driver. The plotter can be accessed boron, gold, or iridium. A postscript file can be plotted with the command # lp filename -dplotter Make sure that the file has been properly previewed and sized.
Charges for plots are based on file sizes (the average size is 8MB). Color backgrounds and high-resolution embedded images can produce very large files (>100MB). See "Basic Equipment Fees" on the wand for the current cost of the plotter.
Some groups are sending the plots out to Kinkos. They currently charge $10 to $12 dollars per sqare foot. Size E posters are about 12 square feet.
