Microlab Emergency Flood Procedures
Please follow these procedures in the event of a flood.
I.              Sinks

The sinks in the lab have 3 sources of water. DI supply, DI return, and industrial cold water (ICW). In the event of a flood, these three supply valves should be turned off.

In the 420 lab areas (new-lab), sink shut-off valves are found in service chases associated with each group of sinks: CG-2, CY-1, CY-2, CV-2, CV-3 and CR-1.

In the 432 lab areas (old-lab), water supplies to sinks is controlled by one set of shut-off valves located on the right-hand side of sink432c.

After shutting off these valves please use the emergency phone list to notify a staff member.

II.       Equipment

Equipment may have several sources of water. If there is a flood associated with a piece of equipment try and find the shut-off valves. These are located in the service chases (new lab) or on the wall (old lab). The main service chase water valves are labeled "IN CASE OF FLOOD CLOSE THIS VALVE". If you have trouble locating water lines the following information may be useful:

Color-codes for tubing supplying utilities such as water
1)       Orange = ICW
2)       Clear = DI (1/2")
3)       Black = DI Return (1/2")
4)       Clear with blue tape = Recirc. supply
5)       Clear with red tape = Recirc. return

Shutoff valves in service chases are typically at the user level. If shutting these off fails to stop a leak, immediately call a staff member. If you fail to reach staff call Cory Building/Facilities or Campus Building/Facilities:

Cory Hall: 2-9888 or 510-917-3511
Campus Facilities: 2-1032 or 510-642-1032

The utilities connections in the service chases of the new lab originate from lines that run overhead.  There is a master shut-off valve for each utility near the ceiling, above each service chase. Access for these valves requires a ladder. One can be found in the oldlab gas storage room, 432E. After shutting off the necessary valves please contact a staff member on the emergency phone list.

III.      Cleaning Up After a Leak

Use the wet/dry vac and necessary tools from 432E (gas storage room to vacuum up the water on the floor. To use the wet/dry vac:

a)       While cleaning up the water, periodically check the water level in the canister. Over filling it will make it difficult to move it to the drain. It has a safety shut-off when full.

b)       Move the wet/dry vac to the floor drain located at the lab entrance near the shelves where the gloves are kept. Empty the wet/dry vac by unclipping the drain tube and placing it into the drain. Then, open the valve on its side allowing the water to flow out into the floor drain.

c)       When you have finished, replace the tools and report the incident on the wand under utilities-problems.
